How to make your space more relaxing for a clear mind

As a Millennial YA , I know what it’s like to spend 90% of my free time alone. As soon as I leave work, the only other place I go is home, otherwise known as my personal space. Stressing out at work all day, then coming home to more mommy stress is just not what I want to do. This is why it’s important for me to make my space more relaxing and to feel like the ultimate comfort zone. There are tons of ways to do this , mostly through self care practices. However let’s touch base on five important things you can do to your rooms (or bedroom) to make it feel like a slice of comfort.

1. Conversation corner

Whether you’re sitting and chatting in the physical world or the digital world, you want to do it in comfort. That means having a space with comfy seats, games and a coffee table for snacks and fun! When you get home this should be the designated place you can associate your mind to relaxation. For most people this is their living room, in my case it’s my bed!

Honestly I wouldn’t recommend having your bed as your comfort zone. For me it totally makes sense as I never have guests, so worrying about people having to hang out in my room is not an option for me.

I will say however, I know this is not a healthy practice and I should disassociate where I sleep from where I relax . I’m basically tricking my brain into thinking I should be attentive and alert in my bed, when it’s actually a place I should be trying to do the opposite!

Ah don’t be me!!


2. Let it shine bright like a diamond

Ok this is an obvious yet not so widely popular solution. You need more your space! I personally love ambient lighting, string lights and candles! Some people prefer to have one large overhead light . Honestly whatever you are comfortable with as long as it’s not dark!

I’m the design world you will find that most offices actually turn off all their lights and people use a personal lamp at their desk. I’m being very clear here , I HATE this kind of environment for work, and I find it highly unproductive, it’s the exact environment I need when I get home and want to be lazy.

The reason for the offices being dark is that some un named annoying people find the sunlight glare on their screens irritating. So to solve the issue everyone must suffer in darkness. It’s unfortunate but that’s the corporate world for you.

That being said, when you get home and you want to spend some me time (or mommy and me time )in your comfort zone ; let the light bring you joy!

Oh and invest in some sheer curtains for some natural sunlight! It’s not too overpowering and can add so much character to make your space more relaxing.


3. Go Heavy on the memories

There is nothing more comforting than being surrounded by memories of loved ones. Now I’m not saying make this space a shrine of your kids, but I am saying you should think about the best memories you have together. Share paintings or a frame box of movie/concert tickets.

You should have little reminders around you of all the little things that truly make you happy.

You could create a fun gallery wall above your comfort couch , or have a shelf dedicated to frames, or even have a Polaroid wall!


4. Go whiter or lighter on the walls

You may not be fortunate to be able to afford a large living space. This means it can get stressful when you truly need a place to unwind and your stuck with a small corner.

My advice to you is to keep your walls white or stay in the pastel to grey spectrum. Having brighter colors in your room will not only open up the space but it will also improve your sense of well-being. It will stop you from feeling cramped and claustrophobic.

Dark colors are to bee avoided everywhere except formal spaces like your dining room . They definitely shouldn’t be in places where living happens

Fun tip – adding pops of color through flowers gives the room a fresh feeling !

5. Bring in your own charm to make it more relaxing

Obviously If this is your own space then it will all be your own charm. However if this is a shard space it needs to feel relaxing and comfortable for everyone. That being said you can select things that make it feel more like YOU without taking over. Maybe purchases your own armchair , that fits the color scheme of the room but ‘it’s personal to you. It reclines just the right amount, or the cushions are the perfect comfort for only your toosh.

You could also add decorative pillows that showcase your personality with fun bold touches and patterns. My favorite is having a super comfy and cozy blanket that I got from Anthropologie that makes me want to snuggle up for hours under!
