The idea of creating an animation can be totally overwhelming; especially if you have no prior design knowledge. You see all these top instagram accounts, with amazing creative instagram stories and you want that too! Not only that, you don’t want to hire a designer, or spend a ton on apps.
I have created an easy 100% FREE step by step tutorial to animate your next photo or video ALL FROM YOUR PHONE!
How to animate your instagram stories
To get started you are going to need TWO FREE APPS which you probably already have on your phone.
These are the only tools you will need to animate your image. Which is great because spending unnecessary money on apps is not where it’s at! To animate something you have to think back to your childhood days when you used to make a flip book.(Anyone younger than a millennial will be thinking what?? ) Basically the rules are every photo is a frame of video. The same way video is today. Our cameras can collect thousands of images per second to place in a timeline, which together becomes a video.
So to create an animated instagram story, you will need to place together several images which you can do using snapchat stories! Snapchat is the most creative app out there for content creators. All of you who are trying to leave snapchat to use instagram stories instead , I would hold back, because THEY ARE THE TREND SETTERS!
This post is written right on time as instagram dropped GIFS into the instagram stories this week! Which is exactly what we are going to be making today! Your very own gif!
Let’s get started with a simple animation – for this we will need at least 6 images before turning it into a video .
Follow along the video for 10 minute tutorial !
step 1 | Choose the Image you want to animate
I’ve picked an image from my camera roll which I planned for another blog post but we’re going to use it here.
Step 2 | open the image in either instagram stories or snapchat stories .
It’s your pick, but today i’ve chosen to use instagram stories because I like the freedom of moving text around.
After you have opened it you will need to create at least 6 different copies of the photo. The reason you need 6 is because once you animate it, each image will be one second long. One second per image is way too long for an animation , which Is why we double the animation speed later on. This will leave you with a 3 second video , which is Instagram’s minimum video length for posting!
I hope i didn’t confuse you , to break it down, the Next step is to basically draw on your photo and make AT LEAST 6 different versions of it.
After you have saved each version you will want to select each photo and put them into a new snapchat story.
Step 3 | Open each image in the new snapchat story you just saved.
You can do this by holding you finger down on the photo and the image will become small with a black border. Then a set of options will appear, in which you can select edit snap. Then one by one change the story time to 1 second and hit done . Then select SAVE and replace . Snapchat automatically saves each image as 4 seconds per image.
Step 4 | Save the snapchat story 3 times
*If you are posting this on snapchat then you can skip this step .
*If you are posting this on instagram stories , then this next step will allow you to have a looping effect rather than it simply playing one time.
select the three dots on the right hand side of the story and select SAVE STORY. This will save all the clips you just made as a video. Repeat this three times.
You should now have three videos in your camera roll. Now head back to snapchat and combine those three videos into a new snapchat story. You can do this by hitting the checkmark in the top right corner .
Select the videos from your camera roll and then hit the circle button with a plus sign . This button will combine them into a story for you.
Once the story is combined , select and edit the second video and swipe right to put it in reverse. Then save and replace. This will create a boomerang effect when all three videos are played together.
Step 5 | Speed it up
Now save the story. If you feel like it’s too slow (which is probably is), simply open up and edit the newest saved video in snapchat and swipe right twice to double the speed . Just make sure your video is not shorter than 3 seconds long.
THATS IT! save the story and post it in instagram stories. and you have an animated video! woohoo!
I do these all the time and if you are following me on instagram you will have seen my fun instagram stories over the past 3 months!
